87km in 12 hours for women with gynae cancers

Dr Narendra Pisal, a consultant gynaecologist, tells us why he has chosen to run the Comrades Ultra Marathon to support The Eve Appeal

Dr Narendra Pisal is a consultant gynaecologist at London Gynaecology, a private clinic attached to The Portland Hospital. As well as dedicating his working life to improving the lives of the female patients he sees on a day to day basis, he spends much of his spare time raising crucial funds for womens’ health charities. He is a keen runner and has to this day participated in 13 marathons.

This weekend will see his biggest challenge yet. Here, he tells us why he has chosen to run the Comrades Ultra Marathon to support The Eve Appeal and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust:

“On June 9th I will be running the Comrades Ultra Marathon in South Africa. It’s a 87km race from Durban to Pietermaritzburg, which includes a massive 2000m ascent and requires all entrants to finish in under 12 hours.

“I expect the race to be a huge feat but am delighted to be raising funds for The Eve Appeal. I am passionate about women’s health but, sadly, see thousands of patients suffer from the effects of gynaecological cancer in my clinics every year. I passionately share The Eve Appeal’s vision of a future free from these devastating diseases, which currently affect women all over the world at all stages of life.

“There is lots of work to be done when it comes to raising awareness, researching the five gynaecological cancers and giving a helping hand to all those affected. The Eve Appeal is doing an admirable job at bringing gynaecological cancers to the forefront.

“With the mortality rate for gynaecological cancers currently at 40%, we need charities like The Eve Appeal to support the progress of pioneering new research into the prevention and early diagnosis of these cancers, where traditional funding is harder to come by. They are the only UK national charity working on all five gynae cancers.

“I am confident the money I raise will go to a great cause, and would be very grateful for any donations. My practice will also be matching all money raised up to £5,000.”
